INDYCAR debuts the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C., this weekend, racing down Pennsylvania Avenue amid the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations.

First sanctioned motorsports race on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C.

No sanctioned motorsports event has used this corridor before. The setting elevates a standard points race, with Alexander Rossi labeling the scale a clear “wow” factor.

Practice opens Saturday at 9 a.m. ET, with a second session and qualifying that afternoon. Both air live. Sunday’s 90‑minute pre‑race begins 11:30 a.m., before FOX’s 1 p.m. broadcast.

This event starts the closing four‑race run. Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing leads by 133 points, 12 better than last year, and looks poised for a fourth straight title.

Alex Palou leads by 133 points and targets a fourth consecutive title.

Palou has six wins from 14 starts. Two more would match back‑to‑back eight‑win campaigns, a feat only Mario Andretti achieved in 1966 and 1967.

The fight for second is tight. Only six points cover Kyle Kirkwood for Andretti Global, David Malukas at Team Penske, and Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard.

147 laps, 250 miles; practice Saturday 9 a.m. ET, race Sunday 1 p.m. ET on FOX.

Lundgaard owns two wins this season. Kirkwood has one. Malukas continues to chase a first series victory as the calendar turns to another street race.

This is the sixth street event of 2026, and the second in successive weeks. Palou leads that form with three wins, while Marcus Ericsson won the previous race in Markham, Ontario.

Twenty‑five drivers start in Washington, including seven Indianapolis 500 winners: Rossi, Ericsson, Palou, Scott Dixon, Will Power, Josef Newgarden, and Felix Rosenqvist.

Seven Indianapolis 500 winners start among 25 drivers.

The backdrop matters competitively. Street layouts reward track position, pit precision, and caution timing, areas where Ganassi and McLaren have excelled, while Penske’s outright pace keeps strategic pressure on rivals.

Attention then shifts to Milwaukee on August 29 at the historic Mile. For deeper context on Palou’s nearest challengers, our Palou rivals analysis outlines the threats.
