Shane Gray returns to Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park for the 72nd NHRA U.S. Nationals, making his Pro Mod debut in the JBS Equipment series presented by Elite Motorsports.

He drives a screw-blown Chevrolet Camaro fielded by Elite Motorsports with Modern Racing and Mason Wright Racing, a car previously handled by Mason Wright and Aaron Stanfield.

He last raced at Indianapolis around 2017–2018, but carries confidence from his 2014 Pro Stock win. Crew chief Justin Elkes, now at Modern Racing, reunites with Gray.

Richard Freeman of Elite Motorsports notes a longstanding partnership with Gray family, recalling Competition Eliminator efforts and 2013 Pro Stock engine rentals. He says the reunion fits the program’s direction.

Gray reunites with 2014 Indy-winning crew chief Justin Elkes to run a screw-blown Camaro in Pro Mod.

Gray downplays expectations and prioritizes enjoyment, noting family, including his grandson, will attend. The approach reduces risk and allows methodical progression through qualifying.

Across 13 Pro Stock finals, he claimed five wins, peaking in 2013 with five finals. He retired after a 2017 Gatornationals win, yielding seat to Tanner; Taylor advanced in NASCAR.

The Camaro was previously driven by Mason Wright and Aaron Stanfield, and now sits under Modern Racing’s tune.

The screw-blown configuration demands tight boost control and clutch management. Justin Elkes oversees tuning, leveraging Modern Racing data and the pair’s Indy history to structure incremental, confidence-building runs.
