Rockingham Dragway joins the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series as the fourth new venue this season, its first major NHRA outing since the Winston Invitational ended in 1998.

The 2026 schedule also welcomed South Georgia Dragway in Valdosta and Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek. The tour then visited U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan, before arriving at Rockingham.

Funny Car qualifying leader Ron Capps welcomes the diversification and the setup challenges new facilities create for drivers and crews. His three-decade tenure underscores the shift in where NHRA races.

Rockingham’s pit layout spreads professional teams more than at other tracks, creating a distinctive, down-home feel. It changes fan flow and team logistics, but adds accessibility.

Rockingham hosts its first NHRA national event since 1998, marking a landmark return to the big stage.

Capps credits NHRA leadership, led by President Glen Cromwell, for broadening the calendar with proven smaller venues. Many operated under IHRA sanctioning and can support top-tier competition.

“Five or ten years ago, you wouldn’t see this shift,” Capps said. He notes widespread buy-in across classes, even with pros pitting on grass at times.

“Five or ten years ago, you wouldn’t see this shift. Now racers are all in,” says Ron Capps.

Sponsor and fan response mirrors that enthusiasm. Partners traveled to Rockingham, adding visible energy and a new-event buzz around the paddock and grandstands.

New venues reduce the historical data teams rely on. Leading outfits counter that by employing track specialists to map surfaces, temperatures, and evolving grip windows.

Capps and crew chief Dean “Guido” Antonelli use wheeled tools to locate bumps and dips. Those readings guide clutch setup, ride height, and staging targets before a pass.

NHRA crews repaired roughly 200 feet of surface overnight after rain, preserving grip and consistency.

Weather amplified Rockingham’s challenge. NHRA crews worked overnight to address about 200 feet of compromised surface after rain, safeguarding consistency for Friday running.

“If that work wasn’t done, it would have been a big problem,” Capps said. “The track was good on Friday thanks to their hard work.”

As teams compress learning cycles, adaptability becomes decisive. These fresh battlegrounds reward operations that rapidly map surfaces and make confident, data-light calls.

Capps’ recent form, including a headline speed record, reinforces that approach. The calendar’s diversity broadens NHRA’s reach while maintaining standards and delivering compelling racing.
