  • Kasey Kahne to race full-time in No. 77 Truck in 2027

  • No high expectations set; focus is on enjoying the season

Kasey Kahne returns to full-time NASCAR in 2027, signing with Spire Motorsports to drive the No. 77 Truck, a schedule tailored to his current health needs.

The 43-year-old last raced Cup at the 2018 Southern 500 before retiring due to elevated heart rate and body temperature issues that made long races and heat management unsustainable.

Kahne signs to race full-time in Spire’s No. 77 Truck in 2027.

Spire co-owner Jeff Dickerson initiated the move after conversations at the Knoxville Nationals, proposing a full Truck campaign that Kahne accepted quickly following discussions with family.

The Truck calendar features 25 events, many at night, reducing thermal load and duration compared to Cup’s 38-race grind. Improved truck cooling systems mitigate the stresses that previously sidelined Kahne.

“I think it fits me pretty well” — Kahne on the Truck schedule and conditions.

Kahne expects an adjustment period. Current trucks run more downforce and less power, changing balance and racecraft. Feedback from Chase Elliott on the latest engine package shapes Kahne’s early expectations.

Spire frames the programme with minimal pressure. Results matter, but the emphasis is process, learning, and race-by-race execution as the team integrates Kahne alongside existing Truck operations.

Spire sets modest expectations: prioritize learning, enjoyment, and week-to-week execution.

Kahne will also continue selective Sprint Car outings with Kasey Kahne Racing, targeting a similar 22–24 race slate, balancing commitments without overloading the physiological demands that triggered his 2018 exit.

Competition will be stern, and adaptation could shape trajectory. As the 2027 Truck Series season unfolds, the aim is consistent finishes while building familiarity with evolving aero and engine traits.

Tyre and setup learning remain ongoing variables across NASCAR. Developments such as Goodyear’s Charlotte tire direction underline how grip profiles evolve, influencing balance targets and long-run consistency.
