Bernie Plourd, 73, will debut in Top Fuel at the Las Vegas Nationals. He earned his license with a 4.06-second pass and targets Pomona next. A lifelong ambition realized.
Raised in Seattle, Plourd grew up beside a Top Fuel team. He met Jerry Ruth and Gus Foster early. That proximity anchored a fascination with nitro racing.
He built a broad Sportsman resume across Stock, Super Stock, Comp, and Top Alcohol Dragster. The highlight came at the 1992 Winternationals. Financial and family priorities curtailed full-time racing later.

He shifted focus to businesses yet kept racing selected events. Blown altered outings and Top Dragster kept skills sharp. His dragster recently ran 6.05 seconds at 230 mph.
Licensing began as a one-day bucket-list plan. Weather delays intervened. Encouraged by wife Ronna, he bought a 2010 Don Schumacher Racing chassis and upgraded it to current NHRA specifications.
Tuner Austin West leads the program. The project quickly evolved from a checklist exercise into a functioning Top Fuel operation.
Plourd first drove the car in Columbus last year. He called the experience frightening. The acceleration surge near 400 feet exceeded expectations, even for an experienced driver.
In Indianapolis, he completed license runs, recording 4.06 at 296 mph. At 73, he may be NHRA’s oldest first-time Top Fuel licensee, joining a notable rookie group.
The paddock response is supportive. Established teams share setup advice and parts guidance. The collegial tone mirrors stories around Will Smith’s Top Fuel campaign earlier this season.
Expectations remain measured. The target is clean, repeatable A‑to‑B runs and safe data gathering over 1,000 feet. That approach aligns with independent efforts like Terry Haddock navigating resource limits.
Plourd’s debut in Las Vegas precedes a planned Pomona appearance. The move injects fresh narrative value while honoring longevity, discipline, and the sport’s demanding technical standards.
