Audi hands Freddie Slater his first Formula 1 mileage, confirming FP1 outings in Mexico City and Sao Paulo this season. The 18-year-old is the 2026 Formula 3 runner-up and top rookie.

The programme forms part of Audi’s push to build its talent pipeline as it transitions Sauber into a full works operation for 2026. It aligns with the brand’s new driver academy.

Slater’s junior record is robust. He has Italian F4 and FRECA titles, and this year finished second in F3 behind Ugo Ugochukwu. He steps up to Formula 2 with Invicta next season.

The FP1 runs provide a controlled introduction to F1 procedures, tyre management, and run-plan discipline. They also satisfy the two mandatory rookie FP1 allocations required by the regulations.

Freddie Slater will run FP1 for Audi in Mexico City and Sao Paulo.

Audi racing director Allan McNish frames the sessions as a key development step. The priority is methodical execution, data quality, and understanding the operational tempo of a grand prix weekend.

Slater welcomes the chance as a milestone and targets clean laps and clear feedback. The experience supports his 2027 pathway and Slater’s F1 seat prospects as Audi scales up.

Audi is leveraging the rookie FP1 quota to accelerate Slater’s preparation for Formula 2 and beyond.

Earlier this year, Audi also ran Alpine junior Paul Aron on a temporary basis. That loan underscored the team’s flexible approach to sampling emerging talent.

Elsewhere, Cadillac development driver Colton Herta will take FP1 at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. It will be his fourth FP1 appearance this season, building on a growing F1 résumé and his US debut plan.

Herta previously drove in Barcelona, Budapest, and Monza. A suspected hydraulic issue curtailed his most recent run. His familiarity with COTA is strong, highlighted by his 2019 IndyCar victory.

He aims for a clean programme that prioritises correlation work and feedback. Team principal Marcin Budkowski values Herta’s circuit knowledge as the team validates upgrades and tunes set-up.

Colton Herta returns for a fourth FP1 outing at COTA, targeting clean data and correlation.

Herta, currently 19th in Formula 2, keeps a 2028 F1 goal in view as plans for next year remain open. Both programmes reflect a wider focus on pipeline building and F1 new driver development.

For Audi, early integration of Slater is strategically aligned with its 2026 build-up. Structured FP1 mileage reduces unknowns and accelerates his readiness for higher-series demands.
