Colton Herta Nears F1 Superlicence with Crucial Points Milestone

Highlights

  • Colton Herta needs two more superlicence points to qualify.
  • Herta earned 38 points after Free Practice 1 at US Grand Prix.
  • Expected points from 2024 and 2025 IndyCar seasons total 35.
  • Three FP1 sessions completed surpassed 100km for superlicence points.
  • Cadillac supports Herta securing his Formula 1 superlicence this year.
  • Herta aims to race in Formula 1 and plans more FP1 outings.

Colton Herta moves within two points of an FIA superlicence after FP1 at Austin, his fourth 2026 outing during United States Grand Prix Friday running for Cadillac.

His official total stands at 38 points against the 40-point threshold. A Cadillac representative suggested 39 after Austin, though the source of any extra point remains unclear.

Herta sits on 38 superlicence points, two short of the 40 required.

IndyCar results underpin his case: one point for 10th in 2023, 30 for second in 2024, and four for seventh in 2025, plus three FP1 mileage points.

An Italian Grand Prix FP1 attempt yielded no point. He completed only 25km, below the 100km minimum the regulations mandate for practice-session superlicence credits.

Two further FP1s exceeding 100km would complete the job. Team planning now centers on available slots and balancing programmes for race drivers and development mileage.

Three FP1 sessions above 100km have already delivered three superlicence points.

Current rules require each race driver to forgo two FP1s annually, creating opportunities. Herta has filled one seat, and Valtteri Bottas is expected to miss another session.

Cadillac publicly supports additional outings, calling it a missed opportunity not to close the licence. The brand views the programme as a strategic investment in readiness.

Herta says he wants back in the car soon, though plans remain fluid. He admits others track the points detail while he concentrates on execution and feedback.

Cadillac backs further FP1 mileage to secure Herta’s eligibility this season.

His growing F1 mileage complements a consistent IndyCar campaign, reinforcing adaptability. Each clean run strengthens the argument that he can manage workload and procedures under pressure.

If further sessions materialize, the 40-point requirement should follow quickly. That would make Herta one of few recent Americans positioned to race in Formula 1.

Interest rose after his US debut, and momentum continues amid a contested midfield, as highlighted in recent Austin battles across the weekend.
