Sainz Penalty Confirmed for Crucial Safety Car Rule Breach

Highlights

  • Carlos Sainz penalized for incorrect Safety Car unlapping at Silverstone.
  • Penalty lap dropped Sainz from 12th to 17th place in final results.
  • Stewards cited Silverstone pit lane layout causes unlapping confusion.
  • Charles Leclerc won the 2026 British Grand Prix after Verstappen crash.
  • Next race scheduled in Belgium from July 17 to 19, 2026.

Carlos Sainz receives a post-race penalty at the 2026 British Grand Prix for an incorrect Safety Car unlapping, demoting the Williams driver from 12th to 17th at Silverstone.

The Safety Car appears after Max Verstappen crashes late at Stowe, neutralising the finish. On the penultimate lap, lapped cars may overtake the Safety Car, and Sainz follows that instruction.

Stewards later determine Sainz contravenes Article B5.13.4c. He crosses Safety Car Line 1 in the pit entry as a lapped car, but Silverstone’s layout briefly leaves him unlapped by the lap’s end.

That timing oddity creates confusion the stewards acknowledge. However, Race Control’s message omits Sainz from those authorised to pass, and Williams fails to spot the ineligibility, as defined by FIA British GP Safety Car procedures.

The sanction is a “penalty lap” under the International Sporting Code, a virtual lap added to race time. Similar administrative penalties have featured in recent late grid penalties.

Stewards apply a penalty lap for an incorrect unlapping under Article B5.13.4c.

The adjustment drops Sainz to 17th in the final classification. It compounds a stop-start campaign for Williams, which already included a DNF at an earlier race.

Silverstone’s pit entry and Safety Car lines create a timing anomaly the stewards formally acknowledge.

The case underlines how circuit specifics can complicate Safety Car enforcement. It may feed into ongoing rule change discussions aimed at removing grey areas for teams.

Leclerc wins as the race finishes under Safety Car after Verstappen’s late crash and reported technical issues.

Leclerc’s victory provides relief after lean results, while Verstappen cites technical problems. Williams now turns to Spa, with Belgium hosting the next round from July 17 to 19.
