Exciting New Contender Secures 2026 F1 Season Finale Backup Spot

Highlights
- Imola considered as backup for 2026 F1 season finale
- Malaysia Grand Prix likely to replace Bahrain on October 4
- Decisions on Qatar and Abu Dhabi races delayed
- Portimao doubts due to planned December renovation work
- F1 aims to keep 22 events despite Middle East uncertainties
- FIA WEC safety decisions may affect F1 Middle East races
Imola emerges as Formula 1’s preferred fallback for the 2026 season finale on December 6, with Bahrain, Qatar and Abu Dhabi under review amid rising regional tensions.
Malaysia is close to confirmation for October 4, likely replacing Bahrain’s slot. Decisions on Qatar and Abu Dhabi are being pushed late, preserving flexibility while F1 protects calendar stability.
If Qatar and Abu Dhabi fall, F1 intends to add a post-Las Vegas race on December 6 to hold 22 events and remain aligned with commercial commitments.

Earlier, Portimao led late-season options thanks to readiness and favorable December weather. Planned renovation work linked to 2027-28 contracts now complicates hosting a race that month.
That shifts attention to Imola, which returned during the pandemic and held a deal through 2025. Flooding cancelled 2023’s race, but the venue remains operationally proven.
A December Imola round would be cold. Average highs near 7°C and mean temperatures around 4°C risk chronic tyre warm-up issues, conservative compounds, and increased graining. A theme this year, as seen in Friday running at Budapest, is how narrow operating windows punish teams.
There is narrative upside. Kimi Antonelli is a title favourite, Ferrari a constructors’ contender, and an Italian finale offers commercial pull, including Stefano Domenicali’s local ties.
Near-term clarity hinges on FIA World Motor Sport Council decisions for the WEC. The calendar includes Qatar on October 24 and Bahrain on November 7, with safety the overriding criterion.
An announcement on Bahrain’s F1 status is expected soon. Any call will cascade through the finale, determining whether a European backstop is activated.
F1 continues to model freight from Las Vegas to Europe, staffing limits, and homologation windows. The target remains a stable, 22-race season with minimal competitive distortion.
