Norris’s earlier Miami Sprint win offered limited evidence. The Hungaroring weekend, with conventional qualifying and race, demonstrated the package’s breadth, improving balance, consistency, and tyre management under pressure.
McLaren adopted concepts visible on Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull cars. Stella admitted uncertainty about the step’s magnitude, but post-upgrade pace in qualifying and race validated the direction.
The upgrade rebalanced underfloor load distribution, taming the MCL40’s instability.
Maintaining contention now hinges on development cadence. Stella expects leading teams to find around half a second collectively over the remaining 11 rounds, making each specification change consequential in the race of upgrades.
Both drivers received the package immediately, accelerating correlation. For Oscar Piastri, the car’s predictability improved in variable winds, reducing snap oversteer and widening the workable set-up window.
