Penske Corporation executive Jonathan Gibson says IndyCar is close to confirming races beyond North America, with announcements expected soon as overseas interest rises.

Speaking at the Autosport Business Exchange in New York, Gibson outlined growing promoter engagement, stronger broadcast reach, and the competitive logic for adding strategically placed international rounds.

IndyCar’s grid spans 13 nationalities, underpinning global appeal and television distribution. The international footprint has been sporadic, leaving headroom for expansion without compromising the series’ North American core.

The last major race abroad was São Paulo in 2013, while Europe last hosted in 2007. Since then, promoters have increasingly approached IndyCar rather than the other way around.

Argentina gained momentum after Juncos Hollinger Racing showcased the series in Buenos Aires and Termas de Río Hondo in 2022 and 2023, but talks paused following the 2023 presidential transition.

IndyCar is close to confirming international races, with announcements expected “pretty soon”.

Mexico’s Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez emerged as a 2026 option but fell to FIFA World Cup timing and logistics. Interest remains high, helped by the profile of Pato O’Ward.

Brazil continues to rate strongly for a return. Colombia has entered discussions, with Barranquilla touted for April 2028, though IndyCar has not confirmed any agreement.

Japan remains central through Bridgestone, Honda, and NTT Data. Any comeback would likely use road courses at Motegi or Suzuka, with Motegi’s oval no longer suitable for competition.

Japan’s return would use road course layouts, with Motegi’s oval no longer viable.

IndyCar last raced in Japan with a non-points event at Motegi in 2011.

Motorsport reports an agreement for Spain’s Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, targeting a summer 2027 debut. The round would bring IndyCar to Alex Palou’s home audience.

Barcelona-Catalunya agreement targets a summer 2027 debut.

Commercial momentum underpins the push, supported by Team Penske initiatives, including global-facing collaborations and the Hitachi alliance, alongside broad international TV distribution.

Added flyaways will test logistics, cost control, and parity. Series leadership must preserve the oval, street, and road course blend that differentiates IndyCar from rival categories.

Latin America remains a priority, with Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and Colombia under active review.

The next months should clarify venues and sequencing, with Europe leading and South America advancing. Asia could accelerate, aided by cross-program drivers like Kaku Ohta moving between IndyCar and IMSA.
