Highlights

  • Brands Hatch and Silverstone contend for UK Formula E race from 2026
  • Race planned for early summer 2027 with Gen4 cars
  • Decision needed before June’s FIA World Motorsport Council meeting
  • Brands Hatch favored for location and spectator-friendly layout
  • Silverstone offers modified International circuit and strong facilities
  • Donington Park considered as third possible UK venue

Brands Hatch and Silverstone vie to host Formula E’s UK return in the Gen4 era, with an event targeted for early summer 2027. A venue decision is required before June.

Talks between Formula E Operations and both circuits have advanced, covering draft layouts and logistics. The 2026-27 calendar must be submitted to the FIA’s World Motorsport Council next month.

A calendar proposal must be approved at June’s FIA World Motorsport Council.

Both venues carry British Grand Prix pedigree. Silverstone hosts F1 today, while Brands Hatch previously staged the race and retains strong spectator appeal.

The move replaces the ExCeL London E-Prix, which no longer suits the larger, faster Gen4 cars. Permanent circuits are favoured for safety, spectacle, and operational simplicity.

A third option remains under assessment, with Donington Park the leading outsider, reflecting its history as Formula E’s UK operations base and test venue.

CEO Jeff Dodds cites Brands Hatch’s proximity to London, easing logistics for teams and fans. Its elevation changes and open sightlines suit showcasing the Gen4 package.

High vantage points allow spectators to follow multiple corners, improving the in-person experience and broadcast clarity at Brands Hatch.

Silverstone presents a different proposition, centred on a revised International layout. Key sections include Village, Becketts via Chapel, and the Hangar Straight.

Dodds describes Silverstone as near plug-and-play operationally, praising experienced staff and infrastructure. The challenge is scheduling alongside F1, MotoGP, BTCC, and ELMS.

There are also talks about a 2027 World Endurance Championship return to Silverstone, which would further compress available dates.

Brands Hatch is the slight favourite due to its London proximity and spectator views.

Against that backdrop, Brands Hatch currently edges the race. Its amphitheatre-like bowl concentrates the action and helps crowd visibility.

Circuit modifications are likely. MotorSport Vision is discussing requirements with Formula E Operations to align safety, infrastructure, and sporting needs.

Brands Hatch last hosted a world championship single-seater in 1986, when Nigel Mansell won the British Grand Prix. It later welcomed F3000 and Champ Car.

Finalising the venue in time for the June submission is pivotal. The choice will shape Formula E’s UK presence as Gen4 technology rolls out across the calendar.
