McLaren Signals Ferrari Edge After Unexpected F1 Showdown

Highlights

  • Ferrari held an unannounced filming day at new Madring circuit.
  • Leclerc and Hamilton completed 200km using only demonstration tires.
  • Madring will host Spanish Grand Prix first time since 1981.
  • McLaren surprised but confirmed Ferrari broke no regulations.
  • Early running may give Ferrari minor performance advantage in September.
  • Race scheduled for 13 September 2026, marking F1’s Madrid return.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella flags a potential Ferrari edge after the team’s unannounced filming day at Madrid’s Madring, ahead of the circuit’s 2026 Formula 1 debut in September.

Ferrari completed the full 200km allowance for promotional running, using Pirelli demonstration tyres and no test equipment, as regulations require. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton shared the SF-26.

Stella says McLaren received no prior notice. He describes the move as a surprise, yet stresses Ferrari operated within the rules and leaves no grounds for protest.

McLaren raises no complaint; the run complies with filming-day regulations.

Footage from the run circulates among teams. Stella notes the surface is incomplete and extremely slippery, limiting meaningful correlation and making braking and traction particularly unrepresentative.

Even so, he accepts Ferrari gains early reference points. Baseline procedures, sight lines, and operating windows under the current power units can inform initial setup and runs when practice begins.

Early running offers small but real reference advantages on a new circuit.

The Madring measures roughly 5.4km with about 20 corners, threading around the IFEMA exhibition site. The layout prioritises traction events and change of direction, testing tyre temperatures and energy management.

Madrid hosts Spain’s Grand Prix for the first time since 1981 on 13 September 2026. Stella expects any head start to shrink quickly once teams gather running during official sessions.

Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring is scheduled for 13 September 2026.

Across the field, teams juggle new‑venue preparation with ongoing car development battles. Margins will hinge on upgrade timing, correlation, and how quickly drivers learn Madring’s rhythm.

McLaren also refines its approach under evolving F1 rules that shape weekend planning, while the wider technical battle with Aston Martin underscores development priorities.

The paddock will watch whether Ferrari’s early laps translate into execution when the cars roll out in Madrid. Any advantage looks modest, but it could decide qualifying margins.
