Williams will mark its 50th Formula 1 season by naming its 2027 car FW50, breaking the usual chassis sequence to spotlight a landmark year for the Grove team.
The decision skips the expected FW49, echoing the FW40 designation used for the 40th anniversary. It underlines a heritage matched only by Ferrari and McLaren across F1’s modern era.
A show car of the FW50 will be revealed as part of a year-long program designed to place fans at the center of celebrations, alongside multiple public events.

The centerpiece is W50 Live, a ticketed exhibition running February 11–28 in Waterloo, London. The multi-sensory showcase tracks five decades of the team’s competitive story.
The venue choice carries symbolism. Frank Williams first met Patrick Head under a London railway arch, and the exhibition returns to arches nearby to reflect those origins.
Williams’ record remains formidable: nine constructors’ titles, seven drivers’ crowns, and 114 Grand Prix victories, spanning ground-effect breakthroughs to hybrid-era efficiency.
Headline cars on display include the FW06, the first Williams Grand Prix Engineering chassis, and the FW11B that powered Nelson Piquet’s 1987 title-winning campaign.
The FW14B, Nigel Mansell’s dominant 1992 car, features alongside the FW19, marking 30 years since Jacques Villeneuve’s 1997 championship.
Also present are the FW25, linked to Juan Pablo Montoya’s long-standing average speed record, and the FW38, with Valtteri Bottas’ 378kph top-speed benchmark.

Continuity underpins the 2027 driver plan. Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz return for a third season together, offering stability as regulations and rivals evolve.
Sainz also carries a rare distinction. He is one of three drivers to have raced for Ferrari, McLaren, and Williams, reflecting broad experience across F1’s longest-serving teams.
Fan engagement extends to the track. Supporters will vote on a special British Grand Prix livery, while limited W50 merchandise includes a Monopoly set and a coffee table book.
Team principal James Vowles frames the program as celebration and reset. He acknowledges recent headwinds, including financial losses, while emphasizing the group’s competitive intent.
Strategic focus already targets 2026–2027 stability. Williams has outlined measures to avoid a 2026 disaster, navigated a rule-change setback, and pursued legal avenues around car development where required.
Against that backdrop, the FW50 designation serves dual purpose: commemorating history and signaling an intent to reassert Williams’ competitive identity as new regulations bed in.
