Fernando Alonso backs Honda to rebound under Formula 1’s 2027 powertrain revisions after a bruising first season of the Aston Martin works partnership in 2026.
Honda’s RA626H initially suffered severe vibrations, prompting Adrian Newey to warn of potential nerve damage for Alonso and Lance Stroll. The team implemented engineering countermeasures to stabilise the installation.
Using ADUO development tokens, Honda introduced updates. The first landed at the Dutch Grand Prix, followed by a new turbo for Stroll in Spain and for Alonso in Azerbaijan.

Even so, turbo lag and drivability remain weak points. Those traits are amplified by the 2026 formula’s equal power split, with the internal combustion engine and battery each delivering 50 percent.
From 2027, F1 tilts the balance toward the engine, then reaches 60:40 by 2028. As outlined in the new powertrain rules, fuel flow increases and combustion headroom grows.
For Aston Martin, a stronger ICE emphasis could mask lag on corner exit and improve throttle modulation. It reduces sensitivity to energy deployment windows that exposed Aston Martin’s early struggles.
Alonso has committed to race in 2027, targeting the mark as the oldest world championship Grand Prix starter since Maurice Trintignant’s 1964 appearance at 46.
He says he still feels fast and enjoys the fight, adding that watching from home convinces him he could outperform others on the grid.
Honda’s development path centres on turbo matching, anti-lag strategies, and drivability mapping. Earlier measures addressed the vibration issue through targeted technical fixes and reinforced hardware around sensitive mounting points.
ADUO tokens remain available, creating choices on when to prioritise hardware over calibration. Timing is critical, as upgrades must integrate without undermining reliability or parc fermé procedures.
Execution will decide whether Honda converts incremental gains into points. The 2027 shift provides direction, but rivals will respond, keeping pressure on Aston Martin’s development rate through next season.
