Mike Conway will retire at the end of the 2026 World Endurance Championship season, confirming the decision before Barcelona’s penultimate round on October 18.

Conway, 43, owns two Le Mans victories and two world titles with Toyota across LMP1 and Hypercar eras.

He and teammates Nyck de Vries and Kamui Kobayashi sit second, 10 points behind Toyota’s #8 crew of Brendon Hartley, Ryo Hirakawa, and Sébastien Buemi, with two rounds remaining.

Toyota has not named a 2027 replacement. Kevin Estre is linked on a potential Porsche loan, underlining cross-manufacturer flexibility in Hypercar driver markets.

The decision follows Conway’s second Le Mans triumph earlier this year and reflects a shift toward family priorities after more than two decades of top-level racing.

Mike Conway will retire after the 2026 WEC season.

Conway cites Toyota’s long-term support and close relationships within the Cologne operation, emphasizing mutual trust and shared achievements since joining in 2014.

His route began in karting at eight, progressed through Formula Renault UK and British Formula 3 titles, then moved to GP2.

A 2009 switch to the United States delivered four IndyCar victories and broadened his skill set across street circuits, ovals, and road courses.

Those competitive dynamics echo the current IndyCar title fight, featuring Scott Dixon, Christian Lundgaard, and Alex Palou.

Conway transitioned full-time to sportscars in 2015 with Toyota and became central to prototype development and race operations.

He secured the final LMP1 crown in 2019–20, then the first Hypercar championship in 2021, when he also claimed his maiden Le Mans win with Kobayashi and José María López.

Two Le Mans wins and two world titles with Toyota since 2014.

Since 2021, he has won at least one Hypercar race each season, underscoring consistent pace, efficiency in traffic, and strong stint management.

Barcelona’s penultimate round shapes the title picture. Expect Toyota to balance aggression with reliability, given the deficit and recent Balance of Performance sensitivities.

Toyota has not confirmed a 2027 replacement; Kevin Estre is linked on a potential loan.

Conway, de Vries, and Kobayashi remain mathematically strong contenders with two events left, but execution under pressure will decide their campaign.

Toyota’s succession planning fits wider paddock reshuffles, akin to recent Honda team leadership changes within IndyCar.

Across series, 2027 driver-market moves also gather momentum, illustrated by Christian Lundgaard’s future planning in IndyCar.

Whatever the title outcome, Conway departs as a reference in endurance racing, valued for technical feedback, calm execution, and leadership in long, attritional events.
