  • Formula 1 to return to Africa with new grand prix in 2030
  • Rwanda selected as host country for the 2030 F1 race
  • New circuit near Kigali designed by WurzDesign and Tilke Engineering
  • Official announcement about Rwandan Grand Prix expected later this year

Formula 1 will return to Africa in 2030, with Rwanda expected to host a new grand prix. It would mark the championship’s first African race since 1993.

The move fits F1’s strategy to broaden its footprint and balance the calendar. Rwanda emerges after sustained engagement with the sport’s leadership.

President Paul Kagame has championed the bid. Kigali hosted the FIA General Assemblies and Prize Giving in 2024, where he confirmed Rwanda’s intention to secure a grand prix.

Rwanda lacks a current Grade 1 facility, so a permanent circuit near Kigali is planned. The site sits about 40km from the city, close to Bugesera International Airport.

Rwanda targets a 2030 debut, moving from bid to build with a new permanent circuit near Kigali.

WurzDesign, led by former F1 driver Alexander Wurz, collaborates with Tilke Engineering on the layout. The target is FIA Grade 1 compliance, modern safety, and efficient event operations.

Tilke’s portfolio spans major projects, including Saudi Arabia’s Qiddiya Speed Park. Established venues like the Sepang International Circuit offer benchmarks for Rwanda’s design brief.

F1 last raced in Africa at Kyalami in 1993. Since then, South Africa’s efforts and proposals from Morocco and Nigeria have not secured calendar slots.

High-level backing strengthens Rwanda’s case. FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali maintain dialogue, while Lewis Hamilton supports a return to Africa.

An official announcement is expected later this year, pending final agreements and governance approvals.

An official confirmation could arrive later this year. The timeline fits 2030 planning, circuit construction milestones, and the FIA’s final Grade 1 homologation.

The Kigali-area location aids logistics, with airport proximity easing freight and team travel. Calendar pairing may mirror efficient clusters seen around events like Singapore.

Rwanda positions the race within a wider tourism and investment strategy. Delivery will need accommodation capacity, transport upgrades, and credible sustainability commitments.

Key risks match typical greenfield venues: timeline pressure, financing, community impact, and operational readiness. Experienced suppliers and clear governance will be decisive.

Design leadership by WurzDesign and Tilke targets full FIA Grade 1 standards for the Kigali-area circuit.

If realized, the Rwandan Grand Prix would reestablish F1’s African presence. The project now advances from concept to execution under close scrutiny.
